2. Shape the future of European education and lifelong learning
The Learnovation project, supported by the Lifelong learning Programme of the European Commission, has produced 24 statements that indicate what should be done to improve European education and lifelong learning systems and to make them more innovative, creative and effective.
All interested stakeholders have now the possibility to rate those statements in terms of importance and relevance. This will help defining the most important "imperatives for change" for European education and lifeling learning beyond 2010.
The Learnovation 26 statements are online for voting: take 10 minutes and contribute to the consultation on the future priorities to increase creativity and innovation in European lifelong learning setting.
The statements are available here: http://spreadsheets.google.com/embeddedform?key=rCEHm8RMvdyuZzt0vXJQWOw
3. Innovation policy review highlights achievements and challenges
The EU and its Member States have made good progress on innovation in recent years. Nevertheless, further action is urgently needed if the EU is to become the world's leading knowledge-based economy. This is the main message from a newly released Commission Communication which reviews progress on innovation in the EU and highlights the challenges ahead. 4. Avatars to be used in new science education software
Virtual characters, or avatars, will be part of a new learning tool designed to attract and retain young European science students. An EU-funded project – DYNALEARN - is developing a programme that emphasises teaching scientific concepts in an interactive environment. The main purpose of the three-year project is to get students more involved in the learning process and to capture their interest in science. It is hoped that the technology developed by DYNALEARN will appeal to students and become a popular teaching and learning tool for a number of subjects in both secondary and higher education. For more information, please visit DYNALEARN: http://hcs.science.uva.nl/projects/DynaLearn/

1. Call for proposals for Marie Curie Initial Training Networks launched
The European Commission's Directorate-General for Research is calling for proposals for Marie Curie Initial Training Networks (ITNs).
In support of training and career development for researchers, the action addresses joint research training networks in the form of either multi- or mono-partner ITNs. The indicative budget of this call for proposals amounts to EUR 243.79 million.
The full details of the call are available at: http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/calls/
2. Lyndsay Laird Award for innovation in aquaculture 2009
The Lyndsay Laird Student Award 2009 has been won by Mr Gonçalo Santos, student at Wageningen University, Aquaculture and Fisheries group (the Netherlands) for his poster “Effects of dissolved carbon dioxide on energy metabolism and stress response in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax)”. The award, set up by AquaTT in memory of an outstanding individual whose achievements are an inspiration to us all, was presented by Dr Selina Stead, President of the European Aquaculture Society, at the EAS International Conference in Trondheim, Norway at August 16th. The award entitles the winner to select a laptop (to the value of 500 Euros) of his choice, as well as choosing an appropriate publication from Springer.
In 2008, AquaTT set up the Lindsay Laird Student Award for innovation in aquaculture to be awarded for the most innovative poster (in English) submitted by a student concerning research in several areas, especially environmental impact in aquaculture, new candidate species, hatcheries/early life history, stock production, fish diseases, new technologies and genetics/genomics.
Lindsay Laird was a remarkable woman, moving easily between the rival spheres of teaching, research and industry, and excelling in all three. A high achiever, relishing being the first with the latest, she nevertheless hugely enjoyed her contacts with people at all levels in all three areas. She was generous with her ideas, triggering numerous research projects as colleagues approached her always open office door. She virtually ran an unofficial one-woman employment agency handling enquiries from fish farms looking for personnel or advising students or ex-students.
In the words of Professor Priede, Lindsay's husband: "Lindsay Laird will not be forgotten by the many whose lives she touched".
3. The Coastal & Marine WIKI: source of professional coastal and marine information
