AQUA-TNET News

1. Aqua-TNET's Successful Annual Event in Spain

From the 5th until the 7th October the first Annual Event of Aqua-TNET was held in Spain. The agenda had an interesting mix of speakers, presentations and work package meetings. Over 50 members participated in the meeting at Eden Roc Hotel in Sant Feliu de Guixols in Girona. The great productivity, the positive feedback and exceptional weather made this a successful event.

The first Annual Event had a good turn-out, 55 members from 20 different European countries attended the event. From Iceland to Turkey and Finland to Portugal, some leaving snow and freezing temperatures, people found their way to the first annual event of the second phase of Aqua-TNET. For the newest members everything seemed overwhelming at first. But it was a great introduction to the project and it gave a great incentive to start participating fully.

The event was dominated by keynote speakers and work package meetings. There was great diversity in the three plenary sessions. The first to address the audience was Martin Scholten (IMARES) on “Aquaculture in the 21st century, trends to be considered in training and education”. His talk generated a lot of response and was found most informative. Eric Bernard from WWF gave an interesting presentation on “How can the Aquaculture Knowledge Generators (e.g research, education, etc) better interact with NGOs”. A lot needs to be done about the relationship between NGOs, industry and education. The most valuable comment was that in the future a start should be made on the relationship between students, universities and NGOs. EATiP was represented by Torgeir Edvardsen. The general conclusion on this keynote address was that the EATiP could well be the future because they will be able to influence the industry, researchers and the EU.

Two final interesting presentations were given by Frederik De Decker from Ghent University Association on "Meeting the Challenge of Providing Lifelong Learning" and David Murphy from AquaTT on "VALLA project - Validation of All Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture".

The work packages had the opportunity to present everything they had done so far. During the event the work packages also had the time to have their second core group meeting. This was used to look at recent achievements and to look to the future: what still needs to happen and which deliverables have to be reached. Good progress was made and some have already made plans on where to hold the year 2 core group meeting.

The other very important part for the work packages was the stakeholder interaction. It was an opportunity to discuss the activities and opportunities for interaction and obtain feedback. Even though not all stakeholder groups could be represented at this event, there was a lot of interaction and good progress was made.

The first Annual Event was a success. The feedback was positive, not only on the event itself but also on the facility. The secretariat is already looking for a new location where the Annual Event of 2010 will be held. Finding one as good as the hotel suggested to us by Lluis Tort will prove to be a real challenge. The secretariat would like to thank all participating members for their commitment and participation.

Research & Education

1. Validation of All Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture project “How to write training units” workshop, 26-27 November 2009, Dublin (Ireland)

The VALLA project has developed a very interesting dedicated software tool based on existing European Best Practise which enables trainers to define non-formal training units (short courses/workshops/placements, etc)  in terms of competences and learning outcomes as well as describing level/assessment/evidence requirements/delivery/credit value etc. It is hoped that by using the tool the drafted units could be of sufficient quality to be submitted to competent bodies for validation and credit valuing. By participating in the workshop, you will go through the process and apply the tool on your own unit(s).

If you are interested in attending this workshop, please contact Olivia (local organiser) at olivia@aquatt.ie, (cc Marieke at marieke@aquatt.ie) providing us with information on the type of case study you would like to do and your contact details, before 28th October at the latest.

For full details of the workshop please visit http://www.vallaproject.com/index/9/events.html

The European Commission has just published a Green Paper on "Promoting the learning mobility of young people" with the aim of opening up a debate on how best to boost the opportunities for young people in Europe to develop their knowledge and skills by going abroad.

Spending a period in another country for studying, learning, work experience or volunteering is one of the fundamental ways in which young people can strengthen their future employability as well as their personal development. With this Green Paper the Commission is launching a public consultation which will be open until 15 December 2009. Responses will be gathered via an online questionnaire and by written submissions.

9. Teachers' Aids on Creating Content for Learning Environments

Teachers' Aids on Creating Content for Learning Environments (TACCLE) is an EU funded Comenius multilateral project. Learning environments offer excellent opportunities for stimulating lifelong learning in both compulsory and adult education. The creation of high quality content for (personal) learning environments is essential for the successful use of e-learning.
