1. Workshop “How to write training units” (VALLA project - Validation of All Lifelong Learning in Aquaculture), 26-27 November 2009, Dublin (Ireland)
The VALLA project has developed a very interesting dedicated software tool based on existing European Best Practise which enables trainers to define non-formal training units (short courses/workshops/placements, etc) in terms of competences and learning outcomes as well as describing level/assessment/evidence requirements/delivery/credit value etc. It is hoped that by using the tool the drafted units could be of sufficient quality to be submitted to competent bodies for validation and credit valuing. By participating in the workshop, you will go through the process and apply the tool on your own unit(s). If you are interested in attending this workshop, please contact Olivia (local organiser) at olivia@aquatt.ie, (cc Marieke at marieke@aquatt.ie) providing us with information on the type of case study you would like to do and your contact details, as soon as possible.
For full details of the workshop please visit http://www.vallaproject.com/index/9/events.html

2. Qualifications: Powerful currencies in search of an exchange mechanism
Qualifications largely determine our chances at employment, our ability to access further education and our social status. But they also have limitations: much of the knowledge and competence we acquire through life is left out of our diplomas, certificates and titles. To close this gap, both the education and employment worlds need to get involved in redesigning and updating the way in which qualifications are awarded and recognised.

4. European Commission resumes awarding of ECTS/DS labels as of 2009
The Commission (DG Education and Culture) has decided to resume the awarding of the ECTS/DS labels as of 2009, and intends to organize yearly application rounds for the ECTS/DS labels in the coming years.Applications for the ECTS/DS labels can be submitted by a Higher Education Institution that has been awarded a Standard or an Extended Erasmus University Charter (Standard Charter and Student placements). Eligible Higher Education Institutions shall submit their request (on the official application form) to the National Agency of the country where it is located. After a screening with the assistance of independent experts, all successful applications will be transmitted from the National Agencies to the Executive Agency where an ECTS / DS jury of experts will examine the applications in order to guarantee consistency of evaluation results on a European level. The Executive Agency, in consultation with the Commission, will then take the final decision about the award of the labels.
The ECTS and DS labels will be honorary distinctions. Higher Education Institutions who held the ECTS and/or DS labels in the past are invited to apply again, given that these labels will expire in 2009.

2. News on the Integrated Maritime Policy
The European Commission released a Communication discussing how the Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP) should be extended into the wider international arena and envisages the creation of an EU framework for a global integrated approach to maritime affairs. It outlines ways in which the EU's authority, as an international maritime power, should be strengthened at the multilateral level and how this would facilitate regional cooperation with maritime neighbours with whom the EU shares sea-basins, as well as helping develop closer bilateral relations with key partners.
